INTERVIEW: Why We Chose Kenya after Nigeria – Maureen Kolenyo, Regional Head, CourierPlus

CourierPlus Services Limited is a leading logistics and distribution services company with over 70 offices; 90 staff; a fleet of 300 vehicles in Nigeria; and offers services to more than 200 countries globally.

From your range of services, which are you starting off with in Nairobi and do you plan a future rollout of all your services in your East and Central Africa branch?

 

We are ready to roll out all the services in the offering.  We deal with our customers using the consultative approach, this allows us to properly identify their needs and proffer solutions based on existing service range and value additions to ensure complete customer satisfaction.

 

Kenya is the first destination in your company’s planned expansion outside Nigeria, why Kenya?

 

Our planned expansion is firstly all across Africa and then other major cities around the world. This process is happening simultaneously as we speak. Opening offices in Nairobi, Kenya is very strategic. Kenya is indeed the economic trade hub for the East and Central Africa region.  Logistically it has direct flights to all the countries in East and Central Africa.  Therefore setting up Nairobi as a hub will allow us to offer superior services to our customers across the region and to other parts of the world.

 

There are already other long-established and recognizable courier brands in the country, how does Courierplus plan on value addition in the courier space in Kenya and regionally?

 

CourierPlus Logistics is a wholly-owned African company and we understand the needs and requirements of the local market.  We will invest in both the domestic and international market.  We will provide services to the whole country and not only the major towns as it the practice with the current courier brands in the country.  Our strength in e-commerce logistics support will also give immediate value to online platforms and companies wanting to operate e-shops.  This market is untapped and there is huge potential.  As we have been very successful in the Nigerian market we intend to use the expertise to successfully provide this service.

 

The Communications Authority of Kenya recently cracked down on unlicensed courier services mostly offered by public service transport companies. Would you have any plans of penetrating this market and how?

 

This is the domestic express courier services we intend to aggressively pursue and our service will include door to door delivery as opposed to the public transporters who expect customers to pick the shipments at their premises.  This service is limited to where the public buses are destined to.  As part of our strategy we intend to have offices and representations in all counties and towns in Kenya.

What has made your company rise to the number four spot in the courier industry in your home country and do you plan on replicating the successful strategies employed in Nigeria in your Kenya operations?

The key to our successful growth is customer focus. We realised early enough that customers just needed someone they could trust with their shipments and so we put a lot of attention on building very efficient delivery network, systems and putting customers needs first always, this allow us to ensure our customers remain satisfied and comfortable with our service level.

What is the value of your investment in the East and Central Africa base, the expected returns and time period pegged on this?

We are committed to putting whatever is necessary to develop the business and ensure its viability and sustainability over time. Our expectations for CourierPlus Kenya are for us to be well grounded in the market and create the growth opportunities for Kenya and the region.

 

What are your views of the courier business in the continent, its potential, viability and sustainability?

The logistics market will continue to experience growth as trade and commerce increases across the globe. Africa has already been identified as having huge potentials as we end this decade, so there are high prospects for the courier and supply chain market segment as a whole.

Where will we see CourierPlus next in its expansion across Africa?

There are a few West African countries coming on stream before the end of quarter 2 2017 and some East African Countries in quarter 3.

He adds that through quality service delivery and excellent customer service, the company seeks to burst the myth that indigenous products and services cannot be competent.
