Safaricom has teamed up with Mezzanine Ware, a company that develops mobile solutions for businesses to launch Connected Farmer, a web and mobile-based service to connect agricultural processing businesses with farmers.
Rita Okuthe, Director of Enterprise Business at Safaricom said, “Our aim is to digitize the end to end operations of agricultural produce processing firms creating supply chain efficiencies, linking farmers to commercial markets while facilitating productivity improvements.”
Connected Farmer enables organizations and farmers alike to leverage its mobile money M-Pesa service to make and receive payments securely.
It also registers and keys in information including expected production quantities, helping processors effectively plan on pick up and workforce, overall reducing production cost.
Commenting on the solution’s implementation, Phillip Kibusie, the Chairman of the Sirikwa Dairies said their dairy farmers previously lacked full visibility of the amount of milk sold.
Connected Farmer, which has been on a six-month pilot that saw 12 firms and 80, 000 register, helps farmers keep track of their sales and manage cash.
