Ghana and Switzerland have signed a cooperation strategy for 2017 to 2020 in the presence of Ghana’s President Nana Addo and President Doris Leuthard of Switzerland.
It aims, among other goals, to increase the West African country’s competitiveness.
As Switzerland’s main trading partner in Africa, Ghana is one of the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) priority countries for economic development cooperation. Ghana is Switzerland’s main supplier of cocoa.
The two leaders recognized the quality of bilateral relations which saw trade between them record 2.38 billion Swiss francs in 2016 with gold imports from Ghana to Switzerland notably increasing to 81.6 per cent from 2015 to 2016.
Bilateral talks focused on economic and trade issues and the two countries’ cooperation in migration, energy, and environmental policies.
The Swiss President was on a visit to Ghana where she also met Swiss businesspeople operating in Ghana and visited a Swiss-supported sustainable pineapple production project.
