Global market leader of cost-effective rental solar power Redavia has launched operations in its eight-container solar farm at Shanta Gold’s New Luika mine in Chunya district, Tanzania.

Shanta is an East Africa-focused gold producer, developer and explorer that holds exploration licenses over a number of additional properties in Tanzania. Its flagship New Luika Gold Mine which commenced production in 2012 produced more than 87, 000 ounces in 2016

With the first container solar plant deployed in 2014, Shanta Gold generated 100, 000 kWh, saved 28, 000 litres of fuel and reduced carbon dioxide emissions of 67 tons per year.

“This is an exciting moment for us as we are now in a position to obtain our energy efficiency, cost and CO2 reduction targets thanks to Redavia,” said Toby Bradbury, CEO at Shanta Gold. “This solar expansion will make us a true role model within our industry.”

Redavia provides businesses and communities with solar power through its system based on a pre-configured container model including high-performance solar modules and electrical components.

Shanta turned to Redavia to lease an additional seven containers after its underground expansion plans resulted in an increased energy demand.

It now has eight containers with a capacity of 674 kWp in operation. Shanta is now set to generate more than 1 million kWh annually, saving 219,000 liters of fuel and 660 tons of CO2.

Redavia’s CEO Erin Spolders expressed the company’s delight at being picked by Shanta to help them achieve their financial and environmental goals.
