Safaricom has released Daraja, a feature-rich M-Pesa Application Programming Interfaces (API) portal to businesses in Kenya.

M-Pesa is a mobile phone-based money transfer, financing and microfinancing service, launched 10 years ago by Vodafone for Safaricom and Vodacom, the largest mobile network operators in Kenya and Tanzania.

It reached five million subscribers, more than all of Kenya’s commercial banks combined in 2008, signalling that mobile money would drive financial inclusion faster. M-Pesa  is now available in 93 countries where it is accessible through 271 services buoyed by 411 million registered mobile money accounts globally.

Daraja will enable businesses in Kenya to easily integrate with M-Pesa’s Lipa na M-Pesa, BuyGoods and PayBill cashless payments into mobile phone applications, websites, point of sale terminals and other solutions.

Bob Collymore, CEO Safaricom said, “M-PESA provides a unique platform that enables thousands of businesses to leverage its capabilities to drive their growth. The simplified onboarding process will enable both small and large businesses to integrate to M-PESA as a payment platform for their businesses with ease.”

The portal will reduce the over 60 days in took for businesses to link to M-Pesa while allowing them to take advantage of the growing e-commerce trend.

It will offer developers interested in integrating and creating new innovations around M-Pesa a more streamlined process such as easily plugging to M-Pesa using friendly programming.

They will also be able to self-manage and access the APIs and to test their code before fully deploying their applications through Daraja.
