Safaricom on Monday launched a music streaming application that will give customers access to two million songs by at least 400,000 artists.

Songa, as the music application is called, is available to Android users.

The company is offering a 14-day free trial after which subscriptions will be sold at Sh25 per day, Sh150 per week or Sh499 per month.

The company says that it has signed agreements with international and local labels and music aggregators including Sony Music Entertainment, Africori, Ngoma and Expedia.

Skiza platform

This is an evolution for Safaricom which has been selling music through its Skiza platform.

Last year, the company says that it paid out Sh1.4 billion to artists on Skiza.

Safaricom will be taking on pre-existing music subscription services such as Mdundo.
