South Africa’s largest food producer, Tiger Brands, has confirmed that it will fight a lawsuit placed on it for its role in the world’s largest ever listeria outbreak, Reuters has reported.
“The company intends to defend the class action,” a statement by the firm was quoted by Reuters as saying. The statement added that Tiger Brands would follow “due legal process and issue further updates when appropriate.”
The listeriosis outbreak, which is caused by bacteria and killed more than 200 people in South Africa in 2018 alone, was traced back to a factory run by Tiger Brands-owned Enterprise Foods, reports confirmed.
Tiger Brands reportedly noted to the stock exchange, as is prescribed for all listed companies, that it had been summoned with respect to the class action lawsuit.
